Wine Tasting to Honor Founder, John Luciano
We honored and celebrated the work and dedication of one Living Through Cancer's founders, and current President, John Luciano on Wednesday, June 9th, 2010
In partnership with hospitals and cancer centers in Philadelphia and surrounding counties, Living Through Cancer has developed education programs and workshops in the areas of nutrition, stress management, improved emotional well being, guidance counseling for patients and their families, care giver support, exercise programs to enhance strength and flexibility during treatment and the availablity of a cancer well-being library. The foundation further provides information on managing skin and hair problems that occur during treatment.
This "old world/new world" wine experience and celebration marked a milestone in the Foundation's history.
Each year, Living Through Cancer Foundation honors dedicated and committed individuals who support cancer patients and their families with our "In The Looking Glass Award." The award is presented at our Celebration of Life and Hope Gala in the fall attended over the years by hundreds of supporters throughout Philadelphia and the Delaware Valley. This an an opportunity to pay honor and tribute to dedicated physicians and supporters who have dedicated their lives and their life's work to cancer patients, and to honor inspiring cancer survivors who help others live through cancer.
In 2009, The Living Through Cancer Foundation presented its In The Looking Glass Awardnto Edith Peterson Mitchell M.D., FACP. Dr. Mitchell is Clinical Professor of Medicine and Medical Oncology, Program Leader of Gastrointestinal Oncology, and Associate Director of Diversity for The Kimmel Cancer Center at Thomas Jefferson University. The 2009 award was given in memory of Elise Gombos.
Dr. Mitchell received a B.S. in biochemistry from Tennessee State University and her medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. In 1973, while attending medical school, Dr. Mitchell entered the Air Force and received a commission through the Health Professions Scholarship Program. She entered active duty after completion of her internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Meharry Medical College and a fellowship in Medical Oncology at Georgetown University.
Dr. Mitchell is a Fellow of the America College of Physicians and a member of the American Medical Association, the National Medical Association, Aerospace Medical Association, Association of Military Surgeons, and the Medical Society of Eastern Pennsylvania. She also belongs to the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group, Radiation Therapy Oncology Group, National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project, and the Philadelphia Society of Medicine.
Dr. Mitchell has authored and co-authored more than 100 articles, book chapters, and abstracts on cancer treatment, prevention, and cancer control. As a distinguished researcher, she has received 21 Cancer Research and Principal Investigator Awards, and serves on the National Cancer Institute Review Panel and the Cancer Investigations Review Committee.
In addition to her medical achievements, Dr. Mitchell is a retired Brigadier General from the Air National Guard. In this capacity, she served as Assistant to the Command Surgeon of the U.S. Transportation command and headquarters Air Mobility Command based at the Scott Air Force Base in Illinois. She also served as the senior medical Air National Guard advisor to the command surgeon and the medical liaison between the active Air Force and the Air National Guard. Her responsibility in this role included ensuring maximum wartime readiness and combat support capability of the worldwide patient movement and aero medical evacuation system, the Global Patient Movement Requirements Center and AMC’s 52 Air National Guard medical squadrons.
General Mitchell has been awarded over fifteen military service medals and ribbons including the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Fprce Achievement and Commendation Medals, National Defense Service Medal, and Humanitarian Service Medal.
The 2008 Living Through Cancer In the Looking Glass Award went to Dr. Thomas G. Frazier, M.D., F.A.C.S. Dr. Frazier began and serves as the Medical Director of The Comprehensive Breast Center at Brynw Mawr Hospital, in Bryn Mawr, PA. We also presented a special recognition award in memory of Elise Combs to Kerry Corrigan, author of "the Middle Place," her compelling and best-selling autobiography of her battle with breast cancer at age 36.
In 2007, Living Through Cancer paid tribute to Dr. Kathleen Greatrex, Chief of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine at Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center with our In The Looking Glass Award. We also honored the Philly Six Coaches Vs. Cancer, Fran Dunphy, James 'Bruiser' Flint, John Giannini, Phil Martelli, Glen Miller, and Jay Wright, for their exceptional effort and dedication to the cancer cause.
We thank the founders, board members, honorary chairpersons, countless supporters and volunteers who help us create annual events to remember, which honor and pay tribute to those on the front lines of cancer research, support and medicine.
